PREPARATIONS FOR SUMMER 2010

I'm excited to be ready early this time around. Teaching the same course each semester has made prep time much easier. I also uploaded my syllabus onto the CSN Course Catalog for the first time. It should be interesting to see how many drop after reading it :-). I've got everything but the surprise extra credit up on Angel. So I all I have left to do for the semester is grade and teach. Last summer I only had 15 students. This year the class already has 44 students signed up, according to Angel, but web grading only has 25--I'm never sure which is more accurate. Either way, it is going to be important to keep up with grading!

This will also be the first time I will be teaching on the Cheyenne Campus. It is a little bit further to drive, but in the summer time, I like the idea of an night course. I'm just over the desert heat.

So everything starts on June 7 and for some strange reason, I'm feeling very good about this semester.

SOC 102 Technical Difficulties with Syllabus Quiz

It has come to my attention that a draft version of the quiz (taken from ealier semesters) was published yesterday. It has been replaced this morning. Unfortunately, that means the people who started and/or finished the quiz yesterday will have to start over with the new quiz.

Fixing the problem wiped out the record of who had started or taken the quiz (I think it was 3 people who started and 1 who finished).

My apologies for the inconvenience. Please let me know if there are any more irregularities, but I believe I have the problem fixed now.

Homework #2 May 6--7 is now up on Angel

The instructions and links to videos are now up on Angel. You need to be prepared to discuss these questions on May 6-7.

Please let me know if you cannot access these items as soon as possible.

REVISED SLIDES

I have put up new slides on the blog and in Angel for April 15 thru April 30 to reflect what we have actually covered in class. If a previous slide is no longer there, it means that we will not be covering that material.

Exam #3 will cover the current slides plus the homework assignments.

Monday, April 27, 2009

Homework #2 Due Date is May 6--7

I had originally planned for the second homework assignment for this section to be due this week, but after reviewing the course notes, I have decided that we will discuss homework #2 on May 6 for sections 101 and 102 and May 7 for section 110. The homework will be posted late today or early tomorrow morning.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU CAN LOG-IN TO ANGEL THIS WEEK AND REPORT ANY DIFFICULTIES. I CAN MAKE ALTERNATIVE ARRANGEMENTS IF I AM GIVEN ENOUGH NOTICE.

EXAM #3 TO BE GIVEN ON ANGEL: HOMEWORK #1

As announced in class, Exam #3 is going to be given online in Angel. It will be 50 multiple choice questions, but you will have the chance to do it over time and to use your class notes and other materials while you take the test.

If you do not have access to Angel yet, please contact me as soon as possible. You will need to have access to it in order to complete the exam or you will need to be in touch with me to make other arrangements.

In accordance with the new testing procedure, I have put up all the slides for the remainder of the semester and I am assigning homework. The homework will be on the exam even if we do not cover everything in class so it is important that you do the homework and understand it.

If you have any questions regarding Angel, Exam #3 or Homework assignments, please let me know.

Problems with Homework Link

It has come to my attention that there has been some problems with the link to the homework reading with it intermittantly coming and going. I've uploaded the article onto the blog and have put a copy of it in the course materials on Angel.

Just to be clear, you need to read this article before coming to class tomorrow. We will be using the information from this article in an in-class writing assignment.

See you soon. Hard to believe Spring Break is almost over!

Cheers,
P

President's Day, Angel System & Homework

Two questions were asked last week that I want to address quickly.

First, I will probably not have time to set up our classes in Angel until after February 15th. The nature of my other job is such that I am extremely busy until that time.

Monday, February 16th, President's Day is a school holiday. Because I want to keep the classes on the same schedule, I am cancelling class on Tuesday, February 17th as well.

My hope is use what would have been class time to get Angel up and running.

Second, I have not been assigning much homework during this first section, but you should be studying and preparing for the exam by making sure you grasp the concepts we are discussing in class. Don't forget that there are parallel readings in suggested text (which you can go to library and check out on reserve) that can help clarify concepts. Also, keep in mind that once we get through the first section you will have a group project and diary to keep, so those of you who are used to homework, don't worry, it's coming.
