Homework #2 May 6--7 is now up on Angel

The instructions and links to videos are now up on Angel. You need to be prepared to discuss these questions on May 6-7.

Please let me know if you cannot access these items as soon as possible.

REVISED SLIDES

I have put up new slides on the blog and in Angel for April 15 thru April 30 to reflect what we have actually covered in class. If a previous slide is no longer there, it means that we will not be covering that material.

Exam #3 will cover the current slides plus the homework assignments.

Monday, April 27, 2009

Homework #2 Due Date is May 6--7

I had originally planned for the second homework assignment for this section to be due this week, but after reviewing the course notes, I have decided that we will discuss homework #2 on May 6 for sections 101 and 102 and May 7 for section 110. The homework will be posted late today or early tomorrow morning.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU CAN LOG-IN TO ANGEL THIS WEEK AND REPORT ANY DIFFICULTIES. I CAN MAKE ALTERNATIVE ARRANGEMENTS IF I AM GIVEN ENOUGH NOTICE.

EXAM #3 TO BE GIVEN ON ANGEL: HOMEWORK #1

As announced in class, Exam #3 is going to be given online in Angel. It will be 50 multiple choice questions, but you will have the chance to do it over time and to use your class notes and other materials while you take the test.

If you do not have access to Angel yet, please contact me as soon as possible. You will need to have access to it in order to complete the exam or you will need to be in touch with me to make other arrangements.

In accordance with the new testing procedure, I have put up all the slides for the remainder of the semester and I am assigning homework. The homework will be on the exam even if we do not cover everything in class so it is important that you do the homework and understand it.

If you have any questions regarding Angel, Exam #3 or Homework assignments, please let me know.

MAKE-UPS FOR SECTIONS 101-102

Because I had a breakdown on the Interstate yesterday morning, I was unable to give the test to the T-Th class and will be giving it to them tomorrow. If were absent on Monday and you want to come sit in during that session, it will be:

Thursday, April 9, 8am to 9:20am
Room C106

Otherwise, see me on Monday for a 10 question essay test take-home exam. The make-up test is harder than the regular test so I would encourage you to come tomorrow if you can.

NO CLASS ON WEDNESDAY APRIL 8 FOR SECTIONS 101 & 102

Class will be cancelled tomorrow, April 8th and will resume next Monday, April 13.

SECTION 110 TEST WILL BE THURSDAY 8AM

My apologies for not being there today. I had a flat tire on the I-515 and it was 9:30 before a tow truck was able to get me off safely. I will see you on Thursday.

Behind Schedule due to Illness

My apologies for not having the study guide for Exam #2 up yet. I spent the majority of the weekend ill and did not get as much done as I had hoped. I am working on it and will have it up as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience.

In the meantime, I have posted the slides from our special study session on Friday for those who were unable to attend. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Problems with Homework Link

It has come to my attention that there has been some problems with the link to the homework reading with it intermittantly coming and going. I've uploaded the article onto the blog and have put a copy of it in the course materials on Angel.

Just to be clear, you need to read this article before coming to class tomorrow. We will be using the information from this article in an in-class writing assignment.

See you soon. Hard to believe Spring Break is almost over!

Cheers,
P

Homework Assignment over Spring Break

As discussed in class, please read the following article during Spring Break:

White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack by Peggy McIntosh.

Pay particular attention to the list.

Come prepared after Spring Break to do an in-class assignment regarding this article.

President's Day, Angel System & Homework

Two questions were asked last week that I want to address quickly.

First, I will probably not have time to set up our classes in Angel until after February 15th. The nature of my other job is such that I am extremely busy until that time.

Monday, February 16th, President's Day is a school holiday. Because I want to keep the classes on the same schedule, I am cancelling class on Tuesday, February 17th as well.

My hope is use what would have been class time to get Angel up and running.

Second, I have not been assigning much homework during this first section, but you should be studying and preparing for the exam by making sure you grasp the concepts we are discussing in class. Don't forget that there are parallel readings in suggested text (which you can go to library and check out on reserve) that can help clarify concepts. Also, keep in mind that once we get through the first section you will have a group project and diary to keep, so those of you who are used to homework, don't worry, it's coming.

LAST WEEK'S 101 SLIDES ARE UP

Due to technical difficulties last week, I did not get the slides up until this morning. Still not on Angel, I hope to do that this coming weekend.

See you in class

Firsts

Today is the first day of classes at the College of Southern Nevada.

It is the first semester I will be teaching 3 sections of the same course (a new experience for me).

But, of course, it is also the first day an African American president will take office.

How can I compete with that?

I plan to let my class out early so they can watch. School can wait for history.
